Panchayat
Under the Kerala Panchayat Raj Act, 1994, a Panchayat is a local self-government institution in rural areas. It functions through representatives directly elected by the people to carry out local administration, development activities, and welfare programmes. The main components of a Panchayat are the President, Vice President, Ward Members, Standing Committees, and the Secretary. Its key responsibilities include rural development, public health, sanitation, tax collection, social welfare programmes, and granting building permits. The primary objective of a Panchayat is to promote economic development, social justice, public participation, and improve the quality of life of rural people.
